About the Aegean Council: What It Is and Why It Is Proposed

The Aegean Council is a proposed inter-parliamentary and inter-governmental framework uniting Türkiye and Greece through structured, rule-based cooperation, modeled on the Nordic Council.

Status

It is currently a formal proposal addressed to the leadership of Türkiye and Greece. It is independent and non-governmental, and it carries no official endorsement from either state until and unless it is ratified by both.

The two founding principles

• Institutional peace: conflict is removed as an option through permanent, documented dialogue rather than episodic crisis diplomacy.
• A structured cooperation framework: a permanent inter-parliamentary body of delegates and ministerial councils, engineered on the proven seventy-year architecture of the Nordic Council.

How it differs from NATO or the EU

NATO is a defence alliance and the EU is a supranational union. The Aegean Council is bilateral and regional, focused specifically on Türkiye–Greece cooperation: parliamentary dialogue, joint programmes, and a shared digital and economic platform.
